Winter health advice
Cold weather makes some health problems worse and puts more pressure on NHS services. A few simple steps can help you stay well over the winter.
Get vaccinated
Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are offered free on the NHS to people at higher risk each autumn. Check the NHS vaccinations page for who is eligible this year.
Keep warm and check on others
- Heat your main living room to around 18–21°C.
- Wear layers, and use a hot water bottle or electric blanket (not both at once) at night.
- Check on older neighbours, especially in cold snaps.
Look after minor illness at home
Most winter coughs, colds and stomach bugs get better on their own in a week or two. A pharmacist can advise on medicines and self-care without an appointment.
