For a medical emergency call 999. For urgent but non-emergency medical help call NHS 111.

What was NHS Direct?

NHS Direct was a 24-hour nurse-led telephone health advice service in England from 1998 to 2014, later reached on the 0845 46 47 number and via nhsdirect.nhs.uk. It provided symptom assessment, medicines advice and health information to the public, and specialist services to other parts of the NHS.

What replaced NHS Direct?

The public phone service was replaced by NHS 111, which launched nationally in 2013. NHS 111 is delivered by regional providers under contract to NHS England. The consumer health information website nhsdirect.nhs.uk was retired and its readers directed to NHS.uk.

When did NHS Direct close?

NHS Direct as a national trust was dissolved on 31 March 2014.

NHS Direct is an independent site — we are not, and have never been, NHS Direct.
