For a medical emergency call 999. For urgent but non-emergency medical help call NHS 111.

General health

This section covers everyday health questions that do not fit neatly under one body area — feeling generally unwell, tiredness, minor infections, or wanting to know how to stay well. If you are unsure what is going on, NHS 111 online can help you decide what to do next.

Looking after yourself

  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids if you feel run-down
  • Eat regular meals and try to get enough sleep
  • A pharmacist can advise on over-the-counter medicines for minor problems
  • Keep up to date with NHS-recommended vaccinations (flu and COVID-19 in winter, others as invited)

When to get medical help

Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:

  • You feel unwell for more than two weeks without a clear reason
  • You have unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or persistent tiredness
  • You have new symptoms and are not sure what is causing them
  • A long-term condition you already have feels different from usual
