For a medical emergency call 999. For urgent but non-emergency medical help call NHS 111.

General eye care

Eyes need very little care most of the time — but a few simple habits keep them healthy and catch problems early. NHS sight tests are free for children under 16, adults over 60, people with diabetes or glaucoma, and several other groups.

Looking after yourself

  • Have your sight tested at least every two years — or more often if advised
  • Take regular breaks when using a screen — every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection on bright days
  • Wear appropriate eye protection for sport, DIY or gardening
  • If you wear contact lenses, follow the cleaning and wear instructions carefully

When to get medical help

Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:

  • You have blurred or double vision
  • You see new floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow in your vision
  • Your eyes are painful, red, or discharging

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have sudden loss of vision, a curtain across your vision, or severe eye pain — go to A&E or an emergency eye department.
