For a medical emergency call 999. For urgent but non-emergency medical help call NHS 111.

Pain relief for eye pain (paracetamol or ibuprofen)

For most eye discomfort — irritation, dryness, mild strain — paracetamol is a good first choice. Ibuprofen is also effective but can slightly increase bleeding, so paracetamol alone is often preferred after eye injuries. A pharmacist can advise on which is best for you.

Looking after yourself

  • Paracetamol 500mg to 1g up to four times a day for adults
  • Ibuprofen 200mg to 400mg up to three times a day with food — avoid if you have asthma, ulcer or kidney problems
  • For dry, gritty or tired eyes, lubricating drops from a pharmacy help
  • Rest the eyes — reduce screen time, take breaks, avoid bright light

When to get medical help

Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:

  • Severe eye pain, a change in vision, or discharge
  • Pain not controlled by over-the-counter pain relief

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have sudden severe eye pain, sudden loss of vision, or an object stuck in the eye.
