Pain relief after a wound
Paracetamol and ibuprofen are both effective for wound pain. Paracetamol is a good first choice; ibuprofen also reduces inflammation and swelling but is not suitable for everyone. A pharmacist can advise on what is safe for you.
Looking after yourself
- Paracetamol: 500mg to 1g up to four times a day for adults; follow the packet for children
- Ibuprofen: take with food. Avoid if you have asthma, stomach ulcers or kidney problems, and in late pregnancy
- Do not exceed the doses on the packet or combine the same drug from different products
When to get medical help
Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:
- Pain is not controlled by over-the-counter pain relief
- Pain is getting worse rather than better after 48 hours
- You are on other medicines and are unsure what is safe to combine
