Standard pain relief for eye discomfort
For most eye discomfort — irritation, dryness, mild strain — paracetamol is a good first choice. Ibuprofen is also effective but can slightly increase bleeding, so paracetamol alone is often preferred after eye injuries. A pharmacist can advise on which is best for you.
Looking after yourself
- Paracetamol 500mg to 1g up to four times a day for adults
- Ibuprofen 200mg to 400mg up to three times a day with food — avoid if you have asthma, ulcer or kidney problems
- For dry, gritty or tired eyes, lubricating drops from a pharmacy help
- Rest the eyes — reduce screen time, take breaks, avoid bright light
