Sexual health
NHS sexual-health services are free and confidential, regardless of age. This page explains what services are available, how to access them, and where to get advice or a test if you are worried about a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Looking after yourself
- Condoms are the only form of contraception that also prevent STIs; free ones are available from sexual-health clinics
- If you are worried about pregnancy after unprotected sex, act quickly — emergency contraception works best when taken as soon as possible (up to 5 days for the copper IUD)
- Home STI test kits are available free in many areas of England — search “free STI test kit” and your area
- Sexual-health advice is confidential; a clinic will not share your visit with your GP unless you ask them to
When to get medical help
Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:
- You have unusual discharge, sores, pain when passing urine, or pain during sex
- You want a test after unprotected sex or after a partner tells you they have an STI
- You want to start, change or stop contraception
- You need emergency contraception
