Pain relief for bites and stings
Paracetamol or ibuprofen work well for the pain and swelling of most bites and stings. Antihistamines from a pharmacy also help with itching and the local allergic reaction — most people can safely take both at the same time. A pharmacist can advise on what is right for you.
Looking after yourself
- Paracetamol: 500mg to 1g up to four times a day for adults
- Ibuprofen: take with food; avoid if you have asthma, stomach ulcers, or kidney problems, and in late pregnancy
- Antihistamines: non-drowsy loratadine or cetirizine daytime; drowsy chlorphenamine if the itch is stopping you sleeping
- Follow the packet doses; do not combine the same drug from different products
