For a medical emergency call 999. For urgent but non-emergency medical help call NHS 111.

Bat bites

Bats in the UK can carry a rabies-like virus (European bat lyssavirus). Bites are rare, but any bat bite or scratch — however minor — needs urgent medical assessment because preventative treatment must be given as soon as possible.

Looking after yourself

  • Wash the wound thoroughly under running water with soap for at least 15 minutes
  • Cover with a clean dressing
  • Do not try to catch the bat

When to get medical help

Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:

  • Every bat bite or scratch — call NHS 111 the same day or go to A&E
  • Any suspected exposure to bat saliva through broken skin or mucous membranes

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have severe bleeding, or an anaphylactic reaction.
