Snake bites
The only native venomous snake in the UK is the adder. Adder bites are uncommon and rarely fatal, but every snake bite in the UK should be assessed at A&E — including bites from pet or “exotic” snakes, some of which are highly venomous.
Looking after yourself
- Keep still to slow the spread of venom
- Keep the bitten limb below the level of the heart if you can
- Remove watches, rings and tight clothing near the bite before swelling starts
- Do not try to suck out the venom, cut the wound, or apply a tourniquet
Call 999 or go to A&E if you or someone else has been bitten by any snake in the UK — call 999 or go straight to A&E. Take a photo of the snake if you can do so safely.
