Spider bites
The UK has no highly venomous native spiders. Most spider bites cause a small painful lump that settles within a day or two, similar to an insect bite. A very small number of spiders in the UK — such as the false widow — can give a more painful bite that occasionally becomes infected.
Looking after yourself
- Wash the area with soap and water
- Apply a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time
- Antihistamines can help itching and swelling
- Paracetamol for pain
When to get medical help
Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:
- The bite becomes red, swollen and pus-filled — could be infected
- Swelling spreads beyond the immediate bite
- You feel unwell after a bite
Call 999 or go to A&E if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction — swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, feeling faint.
