Pain relief for tummy pain (paracetamol only)
For most kinds of tummy pain, paracetamol is preferred over ibuprofen. Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatories can irritate the stomach lining and make some causes of tummy pain worse — including gastritis, ulcers, and some kidney problems.
Looking after yourself
- Paracetamol dose (adults): 500mg to 1g up to four times a day, at least four hours apart. Do not exceed 4g in 24 hours
- Paracetamol for children: follow the dose on the bottle for their age
- Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin for stomach pain unless a doctor has advised otherwise
- A pharmacist can advise on antacids for indigestion or reflux
When to get medical help
Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:
- Pain lasts more than two days or is not eased by paracetamol
- You are unsure whether it is safe to take pain relief with your other medicines
