Pain relief
For most everyday pain, paracetamol and ibuprofen are the two safest and most effective over-the-counter options in the UK. They work in different ways and can, for most people, be taken together for severe pain. A pharmacist can tell you which is best for you.
Looking after yourself
- Paracetamol (adults): 500mg to 1g up to four times a day, at least four hours apart. Do not exceed 4g in 24 hours
- Ibuprofen (adults): 200mg to 400mg up to three times a day with food. Avoid if you have asthma, stomach ulcers, kidney problems, or if you are pregnant (especially third trimester) — ask a pharmacist
- Children: follow the dose on the bottle for their age; do not give aspirin under 16
- Check other cold, flu or pain remedies to avoid a double dose
When to get medical help
Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:
- Pain is not controlled after 48 hours of over-the-counter pain relief
- You are on other medicines and unsure what is safe to combine
- You need pain relief on most days
