Hay fever

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen from grass, trees or weeds. In the UK it usually flares between late March and September. Symptoms include sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes, and sometimes a sore throat.

Looking after yourself

  • Antihistamine tablets from a pharmacy (loratadine or cetirizine are common, non-drowsy choices)
  • A steroid nasal spray works best if started before symptoms peak and used every day
  • Eye drops for itchy eyes
  • Keep windows shut and change clothes after being outside on high-pollen days
  • Shower and wash your hair to remove pollen before bed

When to get medical help

Use NHS 111 online, call 111, or contact your GP if:

  • Symptoms are not controlled with over-the-counter treatments
  • You are wheezy, tight-chested or short of breath
  • You have hay fever and asthma and your asthma is getting worse
